Although the 5 axis laser cutting machines spend a lot of time cutting large pressings for the automotive and yellow goods industries the lasers can also be used for cutting smaller components.
One example is this 3mm diameter tube with a 0.3mm wall thickness, the part has a single 0.2mm cut illustrated with a piece of paper inserted.
The team at GF Laser processed the part on a Trumpf 7040 5 axis laser and constructed a fixture using one of their wire eroding machines. This ensured the tube was held securely in position whilst being laser cut.
This type of part has to be laser cut using some of the lowest power and gas setting to avoid the laser cutting through the other side of the tube.
